Moving an established ERP environment to the cloud requires more than transferring data from one system to another. The migration needs to preserve business continuity while creating a reliable foundation for future growth.
An ICT services provider operating in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, with more than 230 employees, needed to migrate its existing Indis database from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 14 RTM BE to Business Central SaaS.
Xpand completed the migration successfully in 2 weeks, with no tickets or issues reported during either the UAT or warranty period.
Challenge: moving an existing Business Central database to the cloud
The company is an established ICT services provider working with businesses and public organizations. Since January 2023, it has developed a strong presence in the province of Antwerp, with more than 230 employees supporting customers' ICT needs.
The company was running its Indis database on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 14 RTM BE and needed to move the existing environment to Business Central SaaS.
The objective was not simply to upgrade to a newer version. Moving to SaaS would also change how the underlying Business Central environment was maintained and scaled.
The migration therefore needed to successfully move the existing database to the cloud while providing a stable environment for users after the transition – on a timeline the business could plan around.
Solution: migrating Business Central 14 to SaaS in 2 weeks
Xpand migrated the existing Indis database from Business Central 14 RTM BE to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central SaaS, completing the project within 2 weeks using a focused upgrade approach that minimized friction for the customer's internal team.
The migration moved the company away from its existing Business Central environment and established the database in Microsoft's cloud-based Business Central platform.
An important part of validating the migration was user acceptance testing (UAT). This allowed the customer to verify that the migrated environment worked as expected before completing the transition.
Following the migration, the solution also went through a warranty period to ensure that potential post-migration issues could be identified.
Result: a smooth migration with no reported issues
The Indis database was successfully migrated to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central SaaS within a 2-week timeline. Most importantly, the customer reported:
- No tickets or issues during UAT
- No tickets or issues during the warranty period
Beyond the successful technical migration, moving to Business Central SaaS provided several longer-term advantages.
The cloud environment improves scalability as business requirements evolve, reduces the infrastructure overhead associated with maintaining an on-premises environment, and provides access to the continuous updates available with Business Central SaaS.
Business value
The migration gave the company a modern cloud-based Business Central environment without reported issues during either the testing or warranty stages.
Moving to SaaS also changed the longer-term requirements around the system. The company can benefit from a more scalable environment while reducing the infrastructure responsibilities associated with maintaining its own Business Central deployment.
Continuous updates provided through the SaaS model also help keep the Business Central environment current as the platform evolves.
The result is not simply a newer version of Business Central, but a more sustainable foundation for the company's future ERP environment.
